There is a general trend toward allowing fewer cars into city centres. This means a growing demand for transport capacity without increasing environmental stress. Volvo is taking a significant part in this work by developing solutions where noise is lowered and exhaust emissions are reduced or even eliminated. We can present world-leading experience in offering electromobility.

Silence is golden

The challenge of noise is rapidly rising on the agenda of virtually every city. The effects on public health are well-documented and there is also an increasing awareness of the substantial costs related to noise reduction. With electrically powered buses noise emissions are reduced and so too is the need for remedies.

Zone management

In dense city areas, not all types of traffic can be permitted. For reasons of noise, emissions and general safety, restrictions are applied in defined zones or at specific points. At Volvo we are ready to share our experience and to offer proven tools needed to manage these zones.

With electric and hybrid buses, your fuel cost is substantially reduced compared to a regular diesel bus. Electric drive is far more efficient than combustion, and in addition energy is constantly recovered when braking and going downhill. Can you afford not to go electric?

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Fossil-free is not enough

Fossil-free is not enough

In dense city areas, not all types of traffic can be permitted. With electric propulsion you can enter silent zones, safety zones, zero-emission areas and even stop at indoor terminals. Other assumed fossil-free solutions, such as biogas engines, are not viable options when exhausts and noise cannot be tolerated.

Electric propulsion opens up new possibilities. And Volvo’s Zone Management allows the vehicles to comply with restrictions depending on geographical position, day of the week and even time of the day. The driver is informed upon reaching a zone, and the vehicle can adjust automatically without any driver intervention.

The cost of noise

The cost of noise

Noise is not just disturbing. It’s also an expensive, and often neglected, health factor. The regulations gradually step up the demand for cutting noise levels and this results in huge costs for the society and property owners. This means that it is extremely beneficial to reduce noise at the sources, and in city traffic, large diesel and gas engines are obvious targets.

When calculating the cost of noise, comparing combustion engines with electric drive reveals dramatic figures. Independent studies show huge cost savings. In a year it can add up to millions of Euros for the entire city. Contact us and we will send you the full report.

Mobility in the urban environment is a multi-faceted matter, and bus routes can be subject to very different demands. Route length, frequency, capacity and local regulations all result in the need for different types of traffic and vehicles. Pollution and congestion are growing problems, yet all the time the demand for transportation is increasing.

At Volvo we are convinced that electromobility will remain a cornerstone in the urban traffic structure for the forseeable future. That’s why our offer is extended to include more than just the vehicles. Progressive cities will request complete system solutions: high-quality vehicles, relevant services and an open interface infrastructure. In these areas, Volvo is at the forefront in R&D, manufacturing and project management.

ELECTRIC BUSES - The zero zones

In sensitive areas, such as congested city centres and residential areas, exhausts and noise must be kept to a minimum. Electric propulsion is the perfect solution since it's not only exhaust-free but also silent. And thanks to opportunity charging and the battery size, capacity is on a par with conventional buses.

Managing a public transport operation is both complex and complicated. Electric hybrids have the advantage of being able to operate for major parts of a route under the same conditions as for electric buses. What is more, they can replace conventional and hybrid buses and operate even without infrastructure.

HYBRID BUSES - Environmental benefits from day one

Hybrid technology is the first step into electrified mobility. A hybrid bus can directly replace an older fleet and reduce nitrogen oxides and particulate emissions by up to 50%. And just as with other kinds of electrified buses, your passengers and the public will prefer them to conventional alternatives.

INTERCITY BUSES - Taking cars off the commuter routes

The days of diesel buses in city centres will sooner or later come to an end. But modern diesel technology still has a definite role to play. Every commuter and intercity passenger who leaves the car at home and boards a bus will reduce his or her environmental impact to a fraction. In addition there is the reduced congestion.

Opportunity charging

Opportunity charging

Electric and electric hybrid buses are automatically charged at end bus stops. Charging is fast and normally there is no need for schedule changes. It is also the most cost-efficient way to charge buses. In total it requires few chargers, each with a higher utilization rate and low maintenance. And the open interface principle opens the market to several competing suppliers.
